Haxby and Wiggington Methodist Church

In 2014 Vincent & Partners were appointed to renovate and rejuvenate Haxby and Wiggington Methodist Church, on the outskirts of York. We worked closely with the client to complete the project with minimal disruption and complete sensitivity to this historically important building. It was vital that our proposal was sympathetic to the aesthetic and pastoral needs of the parish.

Planning was granted in 2015 and Vincent & Partners were retained to provide full architectural services for the construction phase of the project.

The Parish Council identified a need to address a wide range of community and social requirements. The quaint red brick chapel that served the congregation for many years was now struggling to fulfil the diverse needs of its growing congregation. With a clear understanding of the fabric of the building, our team formulated a scheme that would provide greater accessibility and facilities, along with measures to address rising energy costs. The works included the demolition of the inadequate entrance and the construction of a striking new, central reception area and modern entrance to the Chapel.

Delivered with context and a holistic approach, a first floor was created with the modification of trussed rafters and incorporated disabled lift access. The scheme included alterations to the outdated floor layout to create 4 new, multi-purpose meeting rooms. Alongside aesthetic solutions, an array of photovoltaic panels were installed on the southern roof to supply the bulk of the Church’s daily energy use.

The scheme was completed Summer 2018.
