Roman Quarter is submitted for planning

A planning application has been submitted for The Roman Quarter scheme on Rougier Street, York. An iconic mixed-use development in the heart of the city will provide 290 apartments, a world class Roman Visitor Attraction (EBORACUM) and a retail leisure space.

Vincent & Brown’s design seeks to provide new principle gateway into the city centre and revitalise the area.

The design includes a brick podium, inspired by Roman colonnades, to the lower floors, forming a new active street frontage upon Rougier Street and successfully creates a positive relationship with the neighbouring buildings. Introduction of living walls seeks to soften the harsh urban landscape whilst promoting wellbeing and sustainability within the development.

Careful consideration has been taken in the façade design. Formed in terracotta and bronze, the façade provides fine detailing with geometric patterns and fluting inspired by intricate patterning found in much of York’s historic architecture.

The Roman Quarter will be an exemplar sustainable development. The development will exceed York’s carbon reduction target and will provide BREEAM Excellent commercial space. The car free development encourages use of bikes for all residents with an enhanced cycle provision.

The scheme provides a unique opportunity to regenerate the public realm around the site. Vincent & Brown have worked in close collaboration with Re-form Landscape Architects to reintroduce Tanner Street (A former Roman Street) and provide an attractive and vibrant public realm space.
