Micklegate aparthotel secures planning consent

Situated within the Central Historic Core Conservation Area, Micklegate is renowned as one of York’s most architecturally rewarding streets. Following 2 years of close collaboration with the council’s conservation team and in consultation with key stakeholders, Vincent & Brown’s proposals for a new aparthotel were approved.

The development was informed by the heritage values of the site, including York’s historic city walls and Micklegate Bar. The design of the new building is a contemporary yet sympathetic response to the medieval streetscape, rich with architectural decoration and furniture. Reflecting the form and scale of adjacent buildings, the aparthotel will be constructed using a combination of brick, render, pre-weathered quartz zinc and solid European oak , and floor to ceiling recessed windows. The recessive, double-pitched roofline retains the character of both Micklegate and the wider city centre.

The new building incorporates 62 aparthotel rooms, a ground floor restaurant and bar, and open-fronted entrance. The scheme will contribute to Micklegate’s wider public realm initiative to enrich and revitalise the area, encouraging freedom of movement and enhancing accessibility. The development will stimulate a currently dormant part of the streetscape and facilitate the city’s aspiration for a more pedestrian friendly street, promoting a strong sense of identity and place.

The next phase of the project will begin imminently. The new boutique hotel operator will take the proposals forward to the detailed design stage.
