Lord Mayor breaks ground on The Gasworks

A ceremonial ground-breaking ceremony has taken place on the former Heworth Gasworks Site, York. The development is set to become York’s most revered city centre residential address. Councillor Janet Looker, the current Lord Major of the city, put a symbolic spade in the ground, as demolition of the former gasworks and remediation of the site began.

A spokesman for North Star said: “This represents a major landmark in the scheme and we are grateful for the Lord Mayor to help us celebrate this momentous occasion."

Comprising more than 600 new apartments, each finished to the highest specification, the scheme will breathe new life into the derelict, nine-acre brownfield site. The project represents a significant opportunity to transform the derelict industrial site and create a vibrant, residential community. Incorporating a plethora of communal green space to be enjoyed by all, the development has been designed with wellness and recreation at its heart.

Vincent & Brown achieved outline planning approval on the site in March this year for client, North Star.
